Obesity will account for 20% of the State Budget for healthcare in 2025

Obesity and its associated conditions account for a total cost of 3.4 billion euros, equivalent to one-fifth of the health budget. Studies show that bariatric surgery is underutilized, despite its effectiveness.

MOAI conducted a study with support from Johnson & Johnson MedTech Portugal, highlight the economic and clinical dimensions of the obesity burden: direct treatment of the disease costs 1.9 billion euros annually, to which must be added another 1.5 billion in expenses related to associated conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and various types of cancer.
